Mythos Lens By Kate:

Why Narrative Photography

What is Narrative Photography?

The world is busy, loud, and full of expectations.

Without intention, we can go years forgetting who we are, what matters to us, and how we want to spend our time, with our bodies, our loved ones, our work, and our joy.

Narrative photography helps you remember on purpose.

Remembering helps you release the past, hold grief with care, and intentionally shape how you spend your time and energy as you move into what’s next

Through guided journaling prompts, coaching-style conversation, and embodied photography, we slow down and clarify the story you want to live inside of.

Then we make an image.

That image becomes a touchstone. something you can return to when life pulls you away from yourself.

This process is powerful because it works on multiple levels at once.

Research shows that:

  • Writing clarifies values and reduces overwhelm

  • Being witnessed and reflected supports insight and change

  • Embodied experience helps the nervous system learn what words alone cannot

  • Visual reminders strengthen follow-through and identity

Together, these elements help your story feel real, possible, and lived, not just imagined.

When you remember yourself this way, life changes.

You make choices with more clarity.
You let go of what no longer fits.
You enjoy your work without losing yourself to it.
You show up in your body with more ease and self-acceptance.
You give from fullness instead of depletion.

Remembering is an act of resistance.

In a world that benefits from your exhaustion, remembering restores your capacity to love, lead, create, and care, without burning out.

That remembering ripples outward:
into your relationships,
your community,
and the examples you set for your children and those who look to you.

If you don’t take time to tell your story with clarity, someone else will write it for you.

Narrative photography gives you a way to choose your story,
and to be seen by the people you love the way you want to be seen.

So I ask you now... What Will You Remember?

Remembering helps you release the past, hold grief with care, and intentionally shape how you spend your time and energy as you move into what’s next

Will you remember that your body moves in seasons,
that rest, slowness, and emergence are not failures, but part of your rhythm?

I once created an image of myself layered in a cicada skin,
a reminder that I don’t move at the pace the world demands.
I hibernate.
I emerge when I’m ready.
And when I do, I’m strong and singing.

That photograph reminds me that I am not behind.
I am becoming.

Your remembering might look different.

Maybe it’s remembering that your curves are gorgeous.
That your wrinkles are beautiful.
That your love, in whatever form it takes, deserves to be seen and celebrated.

Maybe it’s remembering to play with your kids in the woods.
To go to the beach with your partner.
To be still.
To be soft.
To be bold.

To be angry.

To grieve.

Narrative photography helps you choose what you want to remember,
and gives you an image you can return to when life gets loud.

Not to escape your life.
But to live it more fully, more presently, and more on your own terms.

I live, work, and photograph in Chicago, Illinois, but I love to travel. Exploring new places, stories, and landscapes deeply feeds my creativity. I'm available for sessions across the U.S. and internationally.
